Can Web Server be a VM ?

Hi,

We are considering to host our intranet in a VM. However, we don't know how
much bandwidth is taken up by a Web Server compared to a SQL Server. Does
250 users access the web server makes a lot of network traffic ?

We would like to know whether it is a good idea to host a web server in a
VM.

It's a little difficult to say without knowing more about how your intranet
is designed, but two factors will provide an important indicator:

1) 250 users are irrelevant in the same way that 250,000 users are
irrelevant - what you need to be thinking about is "concurrent" users...

2) Are you storing lots of data in the Session object? E.g. if you have 200
concurrent users each of whom is persisting 512k of Session data, well you
can do the maths... :-)

There's nothing inherently wrong with it - a VM is really not any different
from a real machine, certainly as far as the guest OS is concerned. It can
be a node on the domain just like any other machine - if it's got enough
resources to do what it needs to do, and its host has enough resources to
give to it, then it should run fine...

Then there should be no reason at all not to use a VM for this.

Obviously, bearing in mind that a VM is no different to a real machine in
terms of licensing (with one or two exceptions), firewall, antivirus etc...

Really you need to take the word 'virtual' out of your thoughts here. There
isn't anything magical that happens when you decide to virtualise a server,
so this is a standard issue of capacity planning - e.g. network throughput,
memory, possibly processor are all areas I might play close attention to for
a web app, and the only way to be sure your server (whether real or virtual)
is up to the task is to model it and see what happens.

Remember, the fact that you're thinking about virtualisation isn't really
relevant to planning deployment of an individual server. Where you need to
be more aware of virtualisation as an issue is when you start to plan *how
many* virtual servers you plan to load onto physical hardware and what, if
anything, that physical server will be doing as well as hosting virtual
machines.
