So I'm thinking of joining MSDN to get the license to run Vista Home Basic
and Vista Home Premium in VMs.

Can anyone describe this process -- the MSDN site is dramatically unclear on
how MSDN membership works if you don't know anything about the subject.

Let's say I get the most basic individual MSDN membership. Can I then --
MDSN EULA in hand -- just install my consumer copy of Vista Home in a VM?

Or do I need to pay more to get some special MDSN version of Vista Home that
can be authorized in a VM?

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/aa718657.aspx , you need the MSDN
Operating Systems Subscription.

From http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/aa700832.aspx , its price is
$699 (US$) for a new subscription and $499 for renewal after the first year.

Note: if you choose not to renew after a year, you still keep the right to
use or install any OS for which you got a license during the subscription's
year but you won't get access anymore to any new versions of operating
systems after that.

The official price for Vista Ultimate is 399.95$ ($357.95 on Amazon) so it's
not really pricy when you take a look at the number of licenses that you
will receive: you will get access to all versions of Vista with 10 licenses
for each and got access to other OS as well.

However, if you only want to run a *single* copy of Vista Home Basic and of
Vista Home Premium (and never reinstall them later on a physical machine
instead of a VM); then buying them individually will cost you a lot less.

To me - and until MS came with an explicative document that will say
otherwise - it's the reinstallation in a VM of the same license that has
already been installed on a physical machine (or another VM) that is
forbidden and not the installation of a second and independant license.

As for the OP, he can take whatever interpretation he might think is the
good one, I don't care, it's none of my business.

Make no sense. The cost of two Vista Business is nearly the same as the
price of MSDN OS and the cost of two Ultimate is more than the price of MSDN
OS. It would be like saying that if you want to buy two cars, you get a
better price if you buy 30 cars instead and shove 28 of them right to the
dump.

Home. However, I don't remember seeing any message or post from anyone
telling that she/he was unable to install it in a VM (other than the usual
compatibility problems with the older versions of VPC/VMWare).
