A *Cool* way to manage VPC "projects"Source: microsoft.public.virtualpc Sent: 04/16/2007 From: ohaya <(email address - cut out)> Message:Hi,
Probably like a lot of others here, I have a LOT of VPC guests that I've
"accumulated" over time, and, in general, I use 'sets' of these guests
for various different test situations (what I refer to as "projects").
With the number of different guests that I have had over time, and the
number of different test environments with which I work, I've had a bit
of trouble keeping track of the guests that make up a particular
"project".
In particular, if I oftentimes work on a particular project intensely
for awhile, then move on to something else, and, whenever I have to come
back to a project I worked awhile ago, it takes me awhile to figure out
which VPC guests I need to re-construct the test environment.
For awhile now, I've been thinking of putting together something like a
VB or ASP application that would allow me to "manage" all of these
various "projects", but every time I got started, I'd give up.
So then, this weekend, I decided to start putting together an Excel
spreadsheet, listing each project, and listing the guests that "make up"
the project. I thought that this might at least save me from having to
remember which VPC guests were needed for various test situations.
That was bit of work, since I haven't worked on some of these projects
for awhile, and it took awhile to figure out which guests were used, etc.
Anyway, I got that most done this weekend, and it worked out pretty well.
Then tonight, I came up with what I think seems to be a 'brilliant'
thought: I wondered if it would be possible to include links to the
various VPC guests in the Excel spreadsheet, and, maybe, fire up the
required VPC guests from within my Excel?
I just tried that in Excel, using Insert -> Hyperlink, then browsing to
the LNK in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application
Data\Microsoft\Virtual PC\Virtual Machines to add a hyperlink into a
cell in the spreadsheet (the LNKs show up in the Excel selection box,
even though they're normally not visible in Windows Explorer).
I then clicked on the cell in Excel, and VOILA, the VPC guest that I had
hyperlinked started up immediately!
I did this with a couple of "projects" in the Excel spreadsheet, and
this "scheme" seems to work pretty well.
There are a couple of very minor annoyances with this approach:
- The hyperlinks appear in the Excel spreadsheet as full paths+filenames
- When you click on the hyperlink, a couple of warning msgs appear
There are probably ways of eliminating the above annoyances, but I'm not
an Excel expert, so I can live with these.
Anyway, I don't know if anyone else can use this hint, but I thought
that it was pretty cool :)!!
Jim
