is it possible to create a new virtual machine from an operating system
already installed on my computer, or do I have to reinstall the OS and all
associated applications? If so, how do I do this? I recently installed
Vista Business on a second hard drive in my computer, but have a fair number
of programs with compatibility issues, so being able to run XP in Virtual PC
without having to reinstall everything would be a big plus.

Acronis apparently does a better job of migration since they have a
feature that looks for hardware differences on restore and tries to
fix those. And this is needed because if there are too big differences
between your physical hardware and the emulated VPC then XP won't
start up (bluescreen).

Then of course you will have to deal with XP activation also...

You can perform this P2V migration, however, chances are high that you will
end up with a white elephant. Whenever possible, you should always make a
full reinstallation to ensure that you have strictly the minimum components
installed on a VM - will take less place on the HD and will run faster.

If you can pay for it, Acronis with Universal Restore is maybe the easiest
method.
