My first time installing and using VPC 2007 so I'm wondering if I'm missing
something in installing XP as a virtual PC. I'm using an SP2 cd for the
install in a VPC window. Some of the files are not copying. Now that could
be because they're not supported on a VPC or because the CD be bad. Is it
typical for some files (e.g. winhlp.*) to not be copied during the install?

No, it's not typical, you may have a marginal CD as you suspect.

It's better to install from an ISO, so if you already have an ISO
file, you can use that.

There's a couple of ways, but the easiest I've found is to launch the
VM that you want to install on, then before it gets done with the BIOS
post, pull down the CD menu and select "Capture ISO Image", then just
navigate you your ISO and select it and you're good to go. If you
didn't catch it in time, just reset the VM and it'll start booting.
