I'm using VPC2007, and try as I may it simply will not boot from my internal
DVD/CD drive. I've tried changing the setting that switches between primary
and secondary interface but this makes no different, it simply goes straight
to the PXE boot every time. I'm trying to boot a Windows Vista DVD, it's
created a VM fine in VMWare but VPC just doesn't want to know. In the VPC
window if I click on the CD menu the option for using the physical CD drive
is greyed out...

Choose your drive.

After the first reboot during the install process you will have to go to the
same place, but this time remove physical drive. Then the remainder of the
setup process will run from the virtual drive.

You need to actually have a CD/DVD in the drive for it not to be
grayed out.

Was there ever any resolution to this? I am having the exact same problem in
my Thinkpad Z61p. I have VPC 2007 installed and am trying to load Vista with
a Microsoft DVD. I have tried all of the things suggested in these threads as
well as some others and I still cannot get my virtual machine to recognize
the DVD in the physical drive.

Hopefully I can shed some light on this. I had read in a different thread
somewhere about making sure the physical drive is set to autoplay. I checked
the settings and it seems that mine was not. I changed the setting for DVD
movie (I was using the Vista DVD) to autoplay and like magic it worked!

Hope this helps anyone else having this problem!

I had the same problem. Virtual PC 2007 did not boot from the DVD, but it actually did from CD. It has taken me hours to figure out that Virtual PC needs to be run as Administrator to be able to access DVDs. (How ever, there is actually not need to be Administrator to access a CD in the DVD drive)

It has never worked for me, on multiple machines. I always have to use an
ISO file of a bootable DVD.

CDs work fine.

Thanks for the the tip. I was not able to access CDs or DVDs until I ran VPC
2007 as administrator. Now I'm good to go. I'm running Vist-32 business.
