VPC for backup & migration in hardware failure

I apologize but I am somewhat new to VPC. I need to establish a backup
procedure for a Dell desktop PC that we use in our office to store and access
all our data and run a few programs from (a PC we use like a server). The
Dell is running Windows XP Pro SP2 currently. I want to backup or virutalize
the "machine" as a whole so that if any of its hardware ever dies I can
restore or migrate the "machine" we were running to a newly purchased machine
without running into hardware conflicts between new and old and I was told
VPC would be the way to go. I currently am using EMC's Retrospect backup
software and an Iomega Rev drive to back up most of my current hard drive. It
has been suggested that I virtualize this machine and then back up the
virtualized machine to two 500 GB hard drives daily to ensure migration of
the "machine" in the event of a hardware failure. Please let me know if VPC
2007 would work for this scenario and some ideas on how to set it up and back
up the VPC. Thanks.
