VISTA Ultimate and Virtual PC 2007 - networking?

I can't seem to get a network working.
I installed Virtual PC 2007 on VISTA Ultimate and then
installed a Windows 2000 Professional on the Virtual PC.
I booted it but the W2k cannot ping anything. The DHCP
addr seems to be allocated 192.168.131.x but ping
doesn't work at all even to the local router which is
192.168.1.1. Virtual Machine Additions are installed.

I have the same problem with a WinPE client OS. It also
cannot communicate over a network.

I'm sure I've missed something, but don't know what.

If you want your virtual machine to work as if it was another machine on
your network, do not use the Shared Networking option. From the VPC console,
set the NIC in the vm to use the option to link to the physical NIC of the
host. Your vm will then get its network config from DHCP on your router. The
192.168.131.x addresses come from Shared Networking.

If you have a Wireless NIC, VPC 2007 does not automatically bind
the Virtual Networking Services service to WiFi NICs. Go into
the properties for the Local Area Connection that represents the
NIC and click the box.

My host is Vista Ultimate x64. I couldn't reach the box. Tried different things, turned off the firewall and I could talk to it in SQL Mangmt Studio.

I'm sure I can have the firewall on and setup so both machines can talk but Windows Firewall is actually useless in a network environment anyways, there's much better solutions, especially if you have a router.

If your guest is getting a 192.168.131 IP you must have set it to use
Shared networking (NAT).

You should be able to see anything on the physical LAN and also have
Internet access but you won't see the host machine.

If you want access to the host, install a Microsoft Loopback Adapter in
the host and run ICS on the host rather than using Shared Networking. This
should set the loopback adapter to 192.168.0.1 and the guest should get a
192.168.0.x IP address (with 192.168.0.1 as its gateway) from the allocator
in ICS.
