Full screen vs. window/ VM additions VPC 2004

I have created a Linux virtual machine in order to use it as a test server
for web development. I have now installed it twice. The first time the
screen resolution was impossible to see - just dots. When I installed it
the second time I changed the resolution and screen size in the Linux
install. Then I lost most of the images on the screen, so I went to full
screen to see if there was any effect. No - so I changed a bunch of
parameters and options in the VM and finally everything showed fine in the
full screen, except the geometry stayed at 800x600 - in other words there
was a full black screen with a tiny 800x600 portion showing the actual Linux
machine. I can't get this back into Window mode. I have tried everything -
including the command line methods shown in Help and it just won't
cooperate. What am I missing?

I tried to install the VM addtions and VPC loads the .iso, but then does
nothing with it. I tried installing it separately by extracting it with ISO
Buster, but got an error that it could only be installed from within VPC.
Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Christina
