I've got an XP SP2 machine with 3.5 GB of RAM. I'm running VPC 2004 on it.
I set up a VPC with 1 GB of RAM, and it runs fine. I tried bumping it up to
2GB of RAM and it eventually hangs. The VPC settings box allows me to
choose any amount of RAM up to the full 3.5 GB, which I know wouldn't work,
since the host needs memory. But is there somewhere that tells me what I
might set for making my VPC run optimally? The host PC doesn't do much of
anything except run VPC and provide the network interface that the VPC uses,
so I don't really need to reserve much memory for the host, other than what
XP needs for basic operation. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

VMware. At a VM config of 256 MB of RAM pages/sec were high. They dropped
significatly at a VM config of 384 MB but no more at 512 or higher. Since
then, for any VM I use that is basically only running the guest operating
system, I only configure 384 or 512 MB, even for a windows server OS. If I
add AD or exchange...well that's different.

running memory-intensive apps such as Visual Studio 2005. The host will be
doing nothing more than running VPC itself, and then being the network
router for the VM network requests. So I want to maximize the VM's
performance, possibly at the expense of the host's.

Given that I have 3.5 GB of RAM on the host, when I configured the VM to
have 2 GB of virtual RAM, it eventually locks up, but if I configure the VM
to have 1 GB of virtual RAM, it doesn't. Should this be the case? What is
the maximum amount of virtual RAM I can give my VM?

The maximum RAM you can give a virtual machine is of course dependent on the
guest OS and the VM software. First, how much maximum does the guest OS
support? After that, how much will the VM software allow per VM? You can
answer this yourself by looking up operating system and VM software
limitations.
