your machine. The first step is to create a virtual machine. The second step
is to install an operating system on that virtual machine. Then you can
think about installing other software on it.

Think of your virtual machines just as you do real machines...

You've installed Virtual PC and created your first guest - that's exactly
the same as going to your local PC store and buying a brand new real machine
with a completely blank hard disk.

What would you do next...?

the virtual pc console that have a virtual machine installed, I click on
start, the virtual machine booted up and I got a message that says, Reboot
and select Proper boot Device or insert boot media in selected boot device.
But virtual cd wouldnâ€™t read or recognized that there is an installation cd
in cd-rom.

I've looked at some of the other answers in installing windows 95, one
answer suggest that I need to install a cd-rom driver in dos and make the
changes to the config.sys and autoexec.bat files. I donâ€™t have any experience
in that area to do this. Can someone take me through this step by step or am
I getting ahead of myself.

You need to take one step back here, and stop and think for a minute...

1) If you had a *real* PC with a completely blank hard disk and switched it
on, what would happen? The answer is exactly what you're seeing here - the
machine (real or virtual) is telling you that it can't find an operating
system to boot from.

2) So, you insert the Windows 95 CD into the CD drive and reboot - what
happens now? The answer is almost certainly exactly the same thing because
Windows 95 CDs, almost always, aren't bootable.

3) So, what would you do next? You insert the Windows 95 boot floppy into
your real machine's A: drive and reboot - what happens now? Your machine
boot off the floppy drive and you're sitting looking at an A:\> prompt.

4) So what's next? Well, next you have to prepare your machine's hard disk
to receive the Windows 95 operating system because the Windows 95 operating
system won't do that for you - later versions of Windows will, but Windows
95 won't...

5) So, still at your A:\> prompt, you type fdisk and press the Enter key -
you follow the instructions and create a partition to install Windows 95
into, and reboot when it tells you to.

6) We're nearly there now - your machine's hard disk has an active
partition, but you still have to format it. So, still at the A:\> prompt,
you type format c: and press Enter. After a few moments, your partition will
be formatted and ready to receive the Windows 95 operating system.

7) So, you change the drive to your CD, which may be the D: drive, or may
even be the R: drive, depending on the configuration files on your boot
floppy. Now, all you have to do is type setup and press Enter. Windows 95
begins the installation process, and you might want to make a pot of coffee
right about now, because this is going to take a little while.

The above process is exactly the same for installing Windows 95 onto a real
machine or a virtual machine.

If you don't have a boot floppy, you can download a virtual one here:
http://www.essjae.com/VPC/ - it's actually from Windows 98, but will work
just as well for Windows 95.
