Hi,

Yesterday I downloaded the free Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 from the
Microsoft web site.

(I want to run some 32bit extended DOS programs - StonyBrook
Modula-2) which are not accepted by the Windows-XP Command
Interpreter.)

I unzipped the 19 MB ZIP-file and typed: setup

Nothing happended.

I waited a minute and again nothing happened.

I repeated the command ... nothing.

I started Widows Explorer, went to the relevant map and clicked setup
.... nothing again.

Is something wrong with the ZIP file?

What can I do to bring life to Virtual PC?

Next I will have to install an OS (Win-98SE) on my virtual PC.
When I run Virtual PC, I see the Virtual PC Console.

Under Action/Properties I see a list of items, all are n/a
Guest OS n/a (should be WinXP-Pro)
Processor n/a (should be Intel P4 3.0 GB)
et cetera.

Choosing Action/Start does not result in a prompt to install an
operating system, as it should (I believe).

Please, how do I tickle Virtual PC into promting for the Win-98
CD-ROM???

No, from a standalone computer with Windows-XP-Pro and 512MB RAM,
Intel P4 3.0 GB.

Robert Comer's advive "try double clicking the msi file." worked.
I now have to install Win-98SE which is not as easy as I had hoped...

You need to boot from a floppy (or a floppy image) As Steve said, he has
all the tools you need to do that on his web site.

It's the same as installing it on a real computer. Even easier if you take

Inside a VM, you will only have 1 hard drive by default. It will
always be the C: drive. The OS inside a VM has no knowledge of the
physical PC or where it's located, it only sees one hard drive, the
virtual one.

Technical Reference (page 8) thet the Guest Virtual machine has the
following specifications (among others):

Up to three IDE hard drives

Now my C drive is a SATA drive (200GB partitioned in 25GB FAT32=C: and
175 GB NTFS=D:

Win-XP Pro is installed on D:

I also have two IDE drives (one drive partitioned in F: and G: both
40GB)

As the Virtual Drive is virtual. does it make any difference whether
it is an IDE or a SATA drive or even a SATA-NTFS drive?
Does it have to be C: or can one install Windows 98SE on F: or G:?

whatever drive controller it wishes. It is the same with usb keyboards and
mice: the guest thinks it is using PS/2 devices but VPC remaps these to the
real devices on the host.

You need to partition and format the VHD before you can install an OS.
That's why you're getting the message abut HPFS or NTFS.

You can't legally install an OEM license on anything but what it came
with. And, a VM is never the same hardware that your OEM license is
for (unless you're running a VPC-Mac OS bundle)

You boot from a Win98 floppy inside the VM, then you use the FDISK and
FORMAT commands that come on the Win98 boot floppy. Then you can run
the setup for Win98.

A VM isn't the same computer, all the hardware is emulated and not the
same as what's on the physical box.

Not if you want to be legally licensed, but you could buy a retail
version of Win98.

written for VPC 5.2, the concepts and descriptions of VMs and VPC is
still the same and relevant to VPC 200x.

Also, you should think about reviewing the Concepts section of the VPC
Help.

Finally, you should also see the Wikipedia entries on VPC and VMs if
you're still confused or want more information.

The VHD is a file in the *host* operating system, but within the
virtual machine maintained by VPC2004 that is not visible. For the VM
it is a non-partitioned and nonformatted IDE disk.
In the VM there is a BIOS like on a real machine and when that boots
up it starts looking for a bootable disk to start operations from.
Here is where it looks at the disk drived *inside the VM*.
The floppy is normally mapped out by VirtsualPC2004 to the physical
floppy you have on your host PC. But for me that is not possible (no
folppy drive on host) so I usually tell VPC to use an ISO image file
as a replacement for the floppy. (Simple operation, just drag the iso
file in Windows Explorer to the folppy icon at the bottom of the VPC
window.)

So now the VM starts up from the floppy and you are basically seeing a
blank PC starting up with an unformatted hard disk and *you* have to
do something about it.

If the OS you were installing was a more recent one like W2000 or XP
then you would not have used a floppy to boot from, instead you would
have used the CD and on that is software that detects this situation
and offesr to prepare the hard disk for you.
Not so with W95 and W98, here you have to do the dirty work yourself.

Notice that the Virtual Machine running under VPC2004 is for all
intents and purposes a completely separate PC that has all the
features of a hardware PC. So when people say you should format the
disk they do *not* mean to format the disk of the *host*!!!!
They mean that you should format the disk of the VM, which will change
the VHD file that VPC20004 manages but to the VM the only thing that
happens is the format. To the host the only thing that happens is that
the VHD file gets changed data....
