virtual pc 2004 sp1 hangs constantly

Message:

hi,

i have just installed vpc2004sp1 on my laptop and started up an existing
guest that worked fine on my desktop and old laptop, but now hangs for about
10 seconds every 10 seconds or so. The mouse literally just stops moving and
the guest is completely non responsive. After the 10 or so seconds, it comes
back fine as if nothing happened, then it does it again about 10 seconds
later and this continues permanently. The guest has plenty of memory (1gb)
and the host is completely unaffected while the hang is occuring i.e. the
host works fine and responds to all input.

now the strange thing is that i found an old message on this group by
googling (from feb 2005) and it describes exactly this problem. it is even
answered by ben armstrong who says that this is a known issue for certain
laptops running vpc sp1 and suggests a couple of workarounds; set power
management to always on (done that) and disable speedstep (my laptop is core
duo and i don't think it has this option in bios, or anyway i can't find it!).

so my question is (to anyone who can help or even ben if he remembers this
problem!), are there any updates to this issue or any workarounds for a core
duo laptop?

cheers
dan
