Comms freeze every three minutes

Message:

I have MS Virtual PC with a WinXP host running over AMD 4200+. Every
3 minutes network connectivity between the host and guest dies for
anywhere from 3 to 18 minutes. (I've written a program to ping host
to guest, and gather stats on when it loses comms and for how long.)

Both environments have full access to the internet, the host has full
access to the LAN, the guest has "mostly stable" access to other PCs
on the LAN even when there is no communication with the host.

I have two guests where this occurs, Windows 2003 Server and Linux.
this tells me the problem is related to VPC and the host, not a config
issue in the guest.

I'm thinking there is some program like (but not) Windows Update that
is polling a remote server every 3 minutes, coincidentally on the same
pipe, socket, or channel that VPC needs to communicate with the host.
Is there such a pipe that is always open like for messaging of mouse
activity, copy/paste buffers, etc? Might that be in conflict with
some other commericialware?

Thanks.
