I post here a thread I initially began at:

in the hope that someone here could help too ;)
I'm in trouble with an anomal behavior with dynamic updates in VPC 2004 SP1.

Resume: In a virtual PC scenario composed of only 1 dns srv and 1 client
(2 win2003 EE machines), dynamic updates work successfully only when I set
up the
client with static IP address or when I install a DHCP srv on the DNS srv.
Main question: is this a known issue?

here is a full report with answers to some questions I've been asked.

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Minimum = 5ms, Maximum = 9ms, Average = 7ms

Actually there's no DC, computer1.domain1.local is the DNS server

no external connectivity is enabled so:

nslookup www.microsoft.com 192.168.0.1

DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.

The host PC (the one that has installed VPC) is not connected to the 2 VMC.
I mean: there is no connectivity between the 2 Virtual machines that have
been configured with the "local only" network; moeover host PC has no
physical network adapter connected to Inernet.

Additional troubleshooting info:

I sniffed the traffic of the renewal and attempt of registration of a
manually assigned alternate IP address (192.168.0.2) and of a static IP
address (192.168.0.3).

I compared the 2 results and I noticed something that I hope could give you
some more info to help me.

In the failed attempt (dyn. reg. of alternate IP 192.168.0.2) I captured 3
frames like this:
ARP_RARP ARP: Requests, target IP: 192.168.0.2 from the "client" to
broadcast.
Next frames were just a series of DHCP Discover broadcasts.

In the successful attempt (dyn. reg. of 192.168.0.3) after the same series
of 3 frames customized for 192.168.0.3
(ARP_RARP ARP: Requests, target IP: 192.168.0.3)
I had about 1 min with no traffic and then a different frame, again a
ARP_RARP broadcast from the "client", but with the server as target request:
ARP_RARP ARP: Requests, target IP: 192.168.0.1

After this event the DNS registration was successfully performed.

I understand that this last ARP request is only the ARP request to "get in
touch" with the dns server but do you
have any idea of what could prevent the manual alternate config to perform
the same process too?

address and an ip address assigned by dhcp. Why are you assigning an

These are 2 win 2003 EE virtual machines; in VirtualPC, the virtual network
is set to "local only".

Yes, this is what they do

It's just for training my 70-291 MS exam, as requsted by my training guide
(which doesn't refer to virtual PC explicitly, though).
