Installation of Vista RC1 under MS Virtual PC 2004 SP1

What follows are explicit instructions for installing Vista RC1 under
MS Virtual PC 2004 SP1. I found pieces scattered everywhere, but I
never found all the information I needed in one place.

1. Download the Vista RC1 .ISO image here:
http://download.windowsvista.com/preview/rc1/en/download.htm

1. Install the "Microsoft Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel". The download
link for "winxpvirtualcdcontrolpanel_21.exe" is available in MSKB
article 916902: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916902

2. Install the Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel in the host system. Start
it up and assign the Vista .ISO file to a disk drive letter in the
host system.

3. Start up MS Virtual PC 2004 SP1. Create a new virtual machine.
Assign at least 512 MB. The default disk drive size will work just
fine.

4. Start up the new virtual machine. As it starts up, click on CD |
Use Physical Drive X: where "X" is the virtual drive holding the Vista
..ISO image file.

5. Installation should occur unimpeded. It took about an hour here.

6. Once installation is completed, the sound won't work (Vista isn't
compatible with ISA cards, and VPC emulates a Creative Labs Sound
Blaster 16 ISA Plug and Play card for sound) and, of course, Aero
Glass won't work (the S3 Trio64 V2 video card that VPC emulates
doesn't have anywhere near the power). Moreover, Vista will be limited
to 14 days operation (unless you provide a Product Key, in which case
the meter runs until June 1, 2007) and it will be agonizingly slow.

7. To speed up Vista dramatically, install the Virtual Machine
Additions (VMA) developed for earlier beta versions of Vista under
Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1. They also appear to work quite well with
Vista RC1 under VPC 2004.

a. Go to https://connect.microsoft.com
b. Sign in, click on "Available Connections"
c. Enroll in " Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 Beta".
d. Once enrolled, click on Downloads and choose the "VM Additions for
Vista Beta 2".
e. Once downloaded, double-click it on the *host* to add an additional
VMA .ISO image to the host VPC installation. There will be no effect
on the availability of the original VPC VMA package.
f. Start up Vista under VPC. Click on CD | Capture ISO Image... |
point to the newly installed VMA file "VMAdditionsforVistaB2.iso".

Once the new VMA package is installed, Vista will be usable as a
client under VPC 2004 RC1.

HTH.

regards, Andy
