Hi,

I recently installed VPC 2004 on a laptop and I'm experiencing very strange
performance anomalies within the VPC. The VPC will run at much faster than
normal speeds and then freeze for a few seconds. It would then resume
operating at very fast speeds and then freeze again.

I have installed VPC 2004 on other laptops in order to support some of our
legacy software and have not had this problem. The only difference I can
pinpoint between this laptop and the other laptops I've installed VPC on is
that this laptop is our first laptop with an Intel Core Duo processor. Are
there known performance problems between VPC2004 and this processor and if
so, are there any hotfixes available?

about hotfix for poor performance on dual core processors. I couldn't find
a download link; I suppose you have to call support to get the link. It
should be a free call so I'll try it tomorrow.

I have tried all of the patches and methods to improve VPC performance on my
Core Duo laptop. I still had the intermittent stop then burst behavior with
my VPC guests on XP sp2 host even though the host utilization would mostly be
at idle (>5%). I am using both 2003 server and XP sp2 guest OS and they both
exhibited this behavior.

I found some other post that talked about how this problem occurred
primarily with Virtual PC 2004 SP1. I uninstalled Virtual PC, then
reinstalled without SP1. All of my VPCâ€™s now operate MUCH faster. In fact
they run very fast compared to my single-P4 HT system.

Of course this may not work on a 2003 host but of you a running XP itâ€™s the
only thing that works.

You're right Steve, VPC 2004. I found the problem - it all works normally after I belatedly installed the "laptop hotfix" that comes with the VPC 2004 SP1 distribution. Oops.

I also have the KB896256 hotfix from Microsoft on this machine, it may help but it did not resolve the problem by itself.
