I have a Windows XP Pro has host using Virtual PC 2004 SP1 and an W2K3 SP1
as guest OS. I map a shared folder between host and guest OS and try to copy
a large file (install.wim of 2,4 GB) from host to guest.

After 5-6 minutes of copying with 30-40 seconds remaining it returns an
error message:

Cannot copy install: The request could not be performed because of an I/O
device error

Any suggestions on why or a workaround?

Try with using a normal network share between the host and the guest...
