Newbie to Virtual PC/Server world.

Dell Inspiron 6000 with 80 GB drive
Currently installed Windows XP on a 35 GB partition. The rest of
the drive is not partitioned at all.

I want to play with SBS 2003 and A/D while using another copy
of Windows XP to test the A/D settings and changes to group policy.

Is this possible to begin with?

I believe I need to install SBS 2003 first then use either Virtual
Server and/or Virtual PC to install XP. Am I correct in this thinking?

I wouldn't do it that way. I would install either VPC or Virtual Server
on your machine using the existing OS. Then create a virtual machine and
install SBS2003 on that vm. Put it in the internal virtual network, give it
a static IP and run it as a domain controller in a new domain. Set up DHCP
as well if you like.

If you want to run a machine as a client to this server, install an
additional vm and install a client OS (such as XP) on that. Put this machine
in the internal network as well. Let it get its network config from DHCP on
the SBS server (or configure it manually to be in the same IP subnet as the
server). You will avoid lots of problems if you keep the host machine out of
the SBS machine's domain.
