I'm running VPC 2004 on WinXP SP2. I have 1.5GB RAM and have allocated
512MB to the VPC. My system is using about 85% of available memory
when the VPC is running. My hard drive is 4200RPM (?- less than 5200).

I have been putting Windows Updates on the XP installed to the VPC. It
has been a couple of hours now and it is only on update 12 of 53.
Windows updates are especially slow. Any suggestions on what is wrong?

Yes - this is installed.

I am on a notebook but not sure what you mean by low power mode.

Ok. Nothing I can do there. I do have a NAS. Should I run the VPC
virtual hard drive from there?

Also, depending on your CPU/Chipset, there are known issues and
hotfixes. The performance issues on certain notebooks is well
documented in the newsgroup. And, one of the fixes is included with
the free VPC2004SP1 download.

I do have a laptop but haven't noticed any performance issues besides
VPC. I don't know where there is a place to adjust the cpu
performance.

I did downloaded VPC2004 with SP1. I didn't notice any difference in
performance. I then moved the virtual hard drive to the NAS. I did
notice a lot of performance improvement but it is still slow.

Just some info I've gathered...

The free Virtual PC 2004 with SP1 is here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/downloads/sp1.mspx

Running SETUP.EXE will install VPC 5.3.582.27, which is VPC 2004 SP1.

Included in the ZIP download is the "Laptop Hotfix" folder, which
includes the hotfix for:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;889677.

Executing the .MSP patch included in that folder brings VPC to
v5.3.582.32.

This patch is *not* included:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;899525.

That hotfix brings VPC to v5.3.582.34.

CPU-Z will tell you the chipset in use (on the "Mainboard" tab). See:

I'm using .34 on my ThinkPad R52 with the 915 chipset.
