Yet another firewall question or three...

Message:

Before I get to the questio(s), let me first apologize for the
long-winded nature of this post and, second, give you the system setups
(there are two).

Home: VPC7 running Windows 2000 under OS 10.4.6 on a G4 Mac behind a
router and firewall.

Work: VPC7 running Windows 2000 under OS 10.4.7 on a G5 Mac on a
(presumably) firewalled Windows Server network.

In both cases, the VM is using shared networking (On the office system,
I get an error message that, although virtual switching is configured
correctly, the guest can't use it - couched in proper error-messagese,
of course).

Having read various and sundry articles here, it appears that I need to
apply firewall and AV software to the VMs although budgets (both my
personal one and that of the municipal governmrnt for which I work)
being what they are, I've been looking at freeware options.

I've tried Comodo on the work system and iit seems to faiil
ungracefully every time that the VM starts up. Does anyone have any
experience with freeware fiewalls in the environment(s) described that
they could recommend?

As to AV software, while I haven't checked with the MIS folks at work
regarding the office network's AV software, I'm assuming that the VM,
using the Mac's IP address and *NOT* automatiically identifying itself
as a Win2K machine on thr city's network when starting up, would not be
getting the latest automatic AV updates from the city's servers at
startup. (Are they "pushed" when a computer authenticates on the
network, or are they "pulled" by a login script...? Yet another thing
that I don't know and probably need to find out from MIS... ["Dammit,
Jim; I'm a Graphic Artist, not a SysAdmin!"])

The possibility is that I can piggyback on the city's AV setup but, if
not (and definitely for the home system) does anyone have any free AV
recommendations (easy to set up and with sufficiently frequent AV
signature updates) that they could recommend?

Any help here is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
