Yes, you can create a virtual hard disk from a physical hard drive. You'll
first need to create a virtual drive, then (if the phys. drive is not already
installed/attached), you'll need to shut the PC down and conect it to an open
IDE or SATA port. Then boot the PC back up and start up the Virtual PC
Console.

Click File > Virtual Disk Wizard, click Next > select Edit an existing
virtual disk, click Next, select A virtual hard disk, click Next, then Browse
to where the iitial virtual disk was created. Select it then click Next (it
may ask you to rename it) click next after that. Select Linked to a hard disk
(Advanced) on the bottom. Click Next, it will show the phys. drive(s) and
probably highlight them or one, depending on how many are installed. Select
the correct one you want to use, then click Next. And finally click Finish.
VPC will now start to create the .vhd from the phys. hard drive.

An easier way is to download a program called winimage. It can copy a
harddrive directly to a vpd file. I did this with my laptop. Then copied the
vpd file over to another computer and opened it in Virtual PC. Windows xp
booted up, found new hardware and rebooted. Now I have a vpc exact copy of my
latop.
