loading XP as guest OS is dog slow

i'm trying to load WinXP SP2 as my first guest OS on VPC SP1 and it is dog
slow copying installation files to a local disk.

I've set performance options so all VPCs get same slice and VPC is supposed
to run at maximum speed

I've noticed Virtual PC.exe is generally taking more than 90% of available
CPU cycles. That seems incredibly high considering I've only allocated 128M
to the WinXP VM.

I have a P4 2.4Ghz desktop with 1 Gig of memory. 20GB of available space
for the drive where the Virtual Disk file is being stored.

Thoughts?

Are you saying that the installation process (i.e. installing XP) is slow?
This is because none of the kernel functionality is virtualised yet.

Install the VM Additions after you have finished installing XP, and things
will be markedly faster. You should consider giving more RAM to your XP VM
though. An XP box with 128MB of RAM will probably struggle even on native
hardware, let along virtualised. 256MB will probably be better.

other than to say it will be a bit slow. However, I'm saying that the
install is so slow the install program times out (does not complete) at about
40%. That's obviously too slow.

sounds like there's something else going on to me.

I'll allocate more memory, but I doubt that's it.

You're right, installlation is very slow. What Ken writes is very likely to
be the reason, although I don't fully understand the technical details.

Apart from that and once the software is installed, there is only one thing
I can say: memory, memory, memory. I typically give an XP installation 512 Mb
up to 1 Gb and the difference is enourmous.

If you think about it: no wonder. Imagine the difference running XP on a
"normal" machine with 128 Mb memory or 1 Gb...

I run WinXP VM's with 128M..... (and sometimes even less) If they are
single purpose VM's 128M is more than enough to run WinXP okay.

actually 128 is enough - I've done it before. It's not running the OS I'm
having problems with. It's installing it.

Besides I bumped the allocated memory up to 512 and it was no different.

There's something else going on.

We are also running XP on Virtual Server. The three servers run fine but XP is dog slow (our expression too). I made copies of the virtual machine and ran it at 512MB. Still slow.
I think XP doesnt get the same resource allocation as the servers or perhaps there is some conflict.
