liunux additions in mandriva problem

Hi,

I know the above is not supported but was thinking this would be the best
place to find someone with even a smidgen of experience in the matter - if I
am wrong please point me in the right direction as I cant find any groups on
betanews.microsoft.com at all relevant.

I am , sadly, a bit of a noob at linux which is why it's in vpc.The
additions seem to install correctly - no errors in the term window I can see
anyway.But when I go to start the service I get an error saying "kernel
module not found.... failed". The only relevant result I found on google did
get past this but can't remember how (he was on fedora core 5 I think).

The version I am using is mandriva 2006 which reports it has no updates
after I ran the updater thingy yesterday. I had planned to install the
additions in fedora core 4 as well (trying to decide which distro I like)
but this experience has made me a little leery as I'm not sure how to safely
revert if I break something important.

I'm aware that this is almost certainly a case of P.I.C.N.I.C. but would
appreciate any advice on offer.

Hi,

thank you Colin but I already have it installed and running - it'the linux
aditions from virtual server I'm trying to get working. I already use
visualwin for hints - I do try and find the answers to these little problems
myself I promise ;-)

I wrote the following as an aide-memoire for SuSE 10 - it may help for your
distro, but please don't blame me if it doesn't...!

Preamble

=======

Throughout the following procedure, SuSE periodically informs you that you
need to run additional commands and do additional reboots etc if you are
using the LILO boot loader. By default, SuSE uses the GRUB boot loader so,
unless you have a massively compelling reason to use LILO, stick with GRUB
and you can safely ignore the LILO messages.

Media

=====

If you don't have the 5 CDs, you can download them here:

http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/ftp.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse/distribution/

Download them to your hard disk and install from there - much faster than
your CD drive. You can burn them to a CD-R later if you like.

Virtual PC

=======

1) Create a new virtual PC as normal, and allocate 512Mb RAM - no more, no
less. This seems to be very important...

2) Launch the new Virtual PC, and capture the first ISO image.

3) Proceed with the installation, selecting region and time zone etc, until
you come to...

Installation Summary

================

1) Click Software.

2) Drop down the Filter combo and select Search.

3) Search for gcc - in the right-hand pane, check everything except colorgcc

4) Search for binutils and make sure it's checked - it probably will be.

5) Search for glibc-devel and make sure it's checked - it probably won't be.

6) Search for kernel-source and make sure it's checked - it probably won't
be. This is vital for the VMAdditionsForLinux later...

7) Click Accept.

8) Click Continue.

9) Click Accept.

10) Click Install and proceed through the rest of the installation,
releasing and capturing the ISO images when prompted. N.B. SuSE may need to
reboot in between CDs 1 & 2.

Network

=======

If the Internet connection test fails, don't worry - it will almost
certainly work after the next reboot.

Online Update

===========

1) Select an appropriate mirror site - the nearest one is usually the best.

2) Make sure all the security (red) updates are checked EXCEPT
"OpenOffice_Org: Security fix for the Macro execution problem".

3) Make sure all the recommended (blue) updates are checked.

4) DO NOT check any of the optional updates.

5) Click Accept.

6) Click Install Patch to install the Linux Kernel patch.

7) Proceed with the installation of the patches.

N.B. this should proceed fairly quickly, but occasionally it looks as if it
has stopped. If this happens, click Abort and then Continue Installation -
SuSE should just pick up where it left off.

8) If you see a message saying that SuSE needs to make some driver
configuration changes to the xorg-x11-server, click OK.

9) When all the patches have been installed, click Finish.

Hardware Configuration - Graphics Cards

==============================

1) Click the "VESA 800 X 600@60HZ" hyperlink

2) In the left-hand panel, select LCD - THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!

3) In the right-hand panel, select the screen resolution of your host
machine, with a refresh rate of 70HZ

E.g. if your host machine runs at 1280x1024, select "1280X1024@70HZ".

4) Click OK

5) Click the "800X600" hyperlink to select the actual dimensions of the SuSE
Virtual PC - slightly smaller than your desktop is a good choice e.g.
1152X864

6) DO NOT CHANGE THE COLOUR DEPTH UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!!

Don't bother with any of the other Hardware Configuration options at this
stage.

7) Click Next.

8) Click Finish - SuSE will reboot.

Keyboard repeat rate

================

You may notice that the key repeat window is far to high. If so, you can
change it this:

1) Pop a terminal window and su to log in as root

2) # /bin/kbdrate -r 30 -d 250 <Enter>

3) SuSEconfig <Enter>
You may need to reboot for this to take effect.

VMAdditionsForLinux

===============

This assumes that you have already downloaded the Linux Additions, and have
installed them on the host PC.

1) Capture the VMAdditionsForLinux.iso

2) Close any autorun Windows - we're doing this manually!

3) On the task bar, click Konsole to pop a console Window

4) cd .. <Enter>

5) cd .. <Enter>

6) cd media <Enter>

7) cd dvd <Enter>

8) cd VMAdditionsForLinux <Enter> - careful - it's case-sensitive

9) su <Enter>

10) Enter the root password which you created during installation

11) rpm -Uvh vmadd-kernel-module-0.0.1-1.i386.rpm <Enter>

12) Reboot SuSE, because you've just installed the updates to the kernel
required by the Linux Additions, and then recompiled the kernel - scary!

13) When the system has rebooted, re-do the above steps 3) to 10) inclusive

14) rpm -Uvh --force vmadd-full-0.0.1-1.i386.rpm <Enter>

15) SuSEconfig <Enter>

16) Reboot SuSE

It did help a bit in making me concentrate on looking for the prob - it
seems it fails making the kernel module and the scsi module saying the
kernel source files are "probably not installed" - i've installed everything
i can find under development in the mandrake package manager but it didn't
help - i suppose this is natrues way of making me rtfm but it might as well
be written in venusian to me. will hit google tomorrow to see if i can find
anything usefull ( it's 4 am for me at the moment and i'm a little
frazzled ) intrestingly in the mandrake package list there is nothing called
binutils so im guessing its another thing mandrake changed the name of.

On a side note that is starting to get right on my left nad - give it a cute
icon of u like but i wish there was standardisation of the names of core
files. switching between fedora and mandrake is a nightmare for this - i'm
dreading using yet another distro.

I think linux is turning me into a wintroll :-(

alt.os.linux.mandrake...

No idea...
