Hi All,
I'd like to use Virtual PC to do my testing. Unfortunately, I only
have one PC with enough memory and disk space to run XP, 2000, and 98SE. It
is currently an XP box, and is my main development box. I don't want to do
testing on my development PC, or at least, not on the XP partition I use for
that.

So, the questions are...

Could I install Virtual PC 2004 on my development XP box, then install
another XP, along with 98SE and 2000, for testing?

If I did this, would my development XP install, the base OS install, remain
safe and protected from all the testing taking place on the virtual machines?

Even if this can be done, are there compelling reasons why this is a really
bad idea?

Yep, I do that very thing on multiple PC's.

Yes.

None that I can think of as long as Virtual PC works on your hardware, and
if it doesn't, you can just uninstall Virtual PC.

A VM is the same computer as the host believe it or not, so that license
would not apply to the VM. (actually I think if you read the full EULA,
it's only one install, so multibooting probably is against the EULA, but for
sure a VM would be.)

On topic: Yes, all those OSs on Virtual PC on your PC will run just fine and
have no impact whatsoever on your "master" PC. That's what Virtual PC is all
about and it does a great job in doing that...

Of topic (on the licenses issues): Think about it: a VM machine is a "full"
and "real" machine just as any other machine. There is no way the VM machine
"knows" it is in reality not a real machine, but merely simulated on a
different machine (wow, this sounds pretty Matirx-ish).

This said, there is no way an installed Windows XP realises it is already
running on the same PC. When you install and activate it, it will clearly
think it is on another PC and won't allow you a new activation.

At the same time, when I think about it, I am not really sure this is 100%
correct: since basically all VM machines you can make on a Virtual PC are the
same, you could go ahead and install XP over and over again and try to
activate it over and over again. I don't know what all the parameters are to
determine one machine from another on activation, but I would expect
Microsoft is able to determine one from another. If not, basically all VM
machines worldwide would "look" the same to the Microsoft activator.

Of course you wouldn't do that: once you got an up-and-running VM machine
with XP you can simply make copies of the hard disk...
