I have a windows 98 virtual PC, running under VPC2004Sp1, on a Windows XP
workstation. Is there any way the network of the virtual PC can be setup to
use the IP address of my XP workstation to ensure access to network resources
can be maintained through firewalls etc.? Currently the virtual PC has its
own IP address in the same sub-net range as the workstation.

That's what I would have thought as well, however even with NAT enabled, the
virtual PC announces itself on the network with it's own IP address, rather
than the IP address of the host (which is what I am trying to achieve). Are
there specific changes needed to the virtual PCs network configuration?

Having delved a bit further using ipconfig in the virtual PC, it would appear
that the virtual PC has the same IP address in both instances however when
using NAT it cannot access any network services (e.g. web servers), yet when
using the NIC it can (although as it has a different IP address, to the host
PC, it can't access and hence test any services behind firewalls).

Any further ideas?

will do what you want I believe. You still want to use DHCP to assign the
IP address in the VM, but with shared networking, the host acts as a router
to let the VM access network resources via NAT.

Thanks Bob, that's solved it. Although I was rebooting the VM it wasn't
releasing the IP address. Using winipcfg solved that.

I'm not sure why it would be doing that, I haven't seen that happen. That
VM's IP address should only be seen on the host PC and not routed out to the
LAN. Do you have more than 1 NIC inside the VM's maybe?

Nothing other than setting the VM to use shared networking in the VM
Settings.

It really shouldn't be the same IP address, it should be a totally different
subnet. Have you rebooted the VM or did an WINIPCFG Release and Renew on
your NIC after making the change in the VM settings?

Make sure you have it set to use a DHCP assigned address inside the VM.
