Blocking when using COM1

I use VirtualPC to run some DOS legacy software. Using a first program I have
no problems when using COM1 that is directly connected to the host COM1. But
using another legacy program the program blocks when trying to use the COM1.
The COM1 is connected to an external device having a serial interface. The
program blocks only when the device is connected. If not connected the
program continues to run in an off-line mode as required. As I can see when
monitoring the serial line that the program sends some data and then the
device sends back the answer. But this answer somehow does not get to the
legacy program running on the virtual pc. Does somebody have some idea about
this problem?
