Lose network connectivity when copying vhd and vmc

I have a weird problem. I am setting up a test network using VPC. I am
currently using the free downloaded version, and have reinstalled it several
times. I am an the process of installing SBS 2003 Premium and applying the
various patches and service packs, as well as installing the software that
is typical of my client installations. I want to make a copy of the vhd and
vmc files as I go along, so that I can try various combinations at various
stages of the build. If something works, I save the changes from the undo
files and continue with the build process. Next I make a copy of the vmc and
vhd files, rename them, and add them to the VPC console and select the
correct vhd file in the settings dialog. Here's where the problem comes in.
When I open the copy of the working image, I lose network connectivity. I
have rerun the internet connection wizard from the SBS to-do list, disabled
and reenabled the network adapters, rerun the remote access wizard. The
event log only shows that W32Time couldn't get the time, and pings don't
work. When I test DNS the local test passes, and the recursive test fails.

My configuration is one connector to a public IP address, one set for local
network (to be used later with the virtual network). This works fine until I
copy and rename the vhd and vmc files.

Any ideas??????

TIA
Mike
