I have a large external hard drive that I share between my PC (a laptop) and
Mac (powerbook). Because of limitations of the Mac, I have found the best
solution is to have the drive formatted in Mac's native format and use
Mediafour's program MacDrive for windows. Since my laptop's hard drive is
small, I would like to have my VPC harddisk on the external drive; however
when I start VPC it is failing to recongize the virtual disk. I know the
virtual disk is good because if I copy it to my internal drive it works and
if I copy it to another NTFS formatted external disk it also works. It
appears to be a limitation between VPC and MacDrive. I contacted MediaFour
and was told to get VMWare.

I would appreciate any advice.

The external drive is Mac formatted HFS+, and the size of the VPC virtual
disk is slightly under 6 GBytes.

Unfortunately if it is a limitation of their software and they choose not to
fix it, not much can be done. I suggest that you email them again, and
explain that you would like to use their software and Virtual PC, and you
aren't willing to switch from Virtual PC because their software isn't built
properly. It is their decision, of course, but you can help make their
product better by pushing them to support it for this rather important use

Bob: As the other two responders pointed out, that won't work. Fortunately,
you don't have to do that if your Mac running Parallels is on a LAN.

Just attach the ext. NTFS formatted drive to Windows XP running as a
Parallels Guest OS on the Intel Mac. Then, share the drive (safely of
course) on your LAN. Mac OS X will be able to see the drive as a Windows
share and use it.

I don't think you'll be able to run VPC inside of Parallels, and even if you
could, the double emulation of devices would make it cryingly slow...
