I would like to be sure I have the correct version of Virtual PC installed.
The CD from which I installed VPC said Part Number x10-65791. The version
number is 5.3.0.582. Is this the correct version of VPC 2004 to run on a
notebook computer that has Windows XP Professional ver 5.1..2600 SP2
installed?

I downloaded and installed SP1. When the install finished it said
,"successfully installed", however during the install process a window
popped-up twice that said , "Internal Error 2803". Both times I clicked OK
and the install continued.

What is error 2803?

I'm pretty sure that's okay, if VPC works after the install it's not
important. If it doesn't work, I'd suggest uninstalling VPC and downloading
the free version from the web and installing that -- it includes SP1.

I recommend:

1. Uninstall VPC
2. Reboot PC
3. Install VPC
4. Reboot PC
5. Run VPC

Just some info I've gathered...

The free Virtual PC 2004 with SP1 is here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/downloads/sp1.mspx

Running SETUP.EXE will install VPC 5.3.582.27, which is VPC 2004 SP1.

Included in the ZIP download is the "Laptop Hotfix" folder, which
includes the hotfix for:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;889677.

Executing the .MSP patch included in that folder brings VPC to
v5.3.582.32.

This patch is *not* included:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;899525.

That hotfix brings VPC to v5.3.582.34.

programs. What would happen to virtual hard dik drive?

If you haven't installed a virtual machine yet then there would be no
virtual hard drive files. If you have, the maintenance programs will not
bother them.
