Can anyone provide any insight into the subject. In short, I would like to
boot a DD image of a system into VPC. Much like using an .iso image to boot
into.

DD can be used to write bootable iso and bootable floppy images, but
assuming you're dealing with filesystems which are not already laid out as
bootable iso/floppy, then you cannot boot directly from DD images with
Microsoft Virtual PC nor Virtual Server.

Booting directly from DD images is only practical with QEMU. Under certain
conditions, it can be done with VMware but VMware does not support it, due
to the many issues and complications. Many of those issues also exist with
QEMU but QEMU fans are typically accustomed to dealing with or tolerating
such problems.

Thanks for the reply. I have never heard of QEMU but will check it out.
Also, if the filesystem in a DD image is bootable, I am assuming I can use DD
to write an .iso of the filesystem and then boot into VPC/VServer. I guess I
need to start testing.
