Hello, All,

I'm new to virtualPC and I want to know:

1. Do you need at least 1G of memory if you want to install windows 2003 and
maybe a client, like XP

2. Can you have a virtual network on top of your box, simulating being in a
LAN environment, with things like DHCP, DNS, etc.

I want to have it set up so that I have a lab environment where I can get
hands-on with 2003 server, learn about network infrastructure, like TCP/IP,
DHCP, DNS, RRAS, etc.

Server (512 recommended) + 128MB for XP (64MB is supported but some features
won't work).

As you can see 1GB is a good idea. You may want to clean boot the host to
reduce memory usage if you only have 512MB.

Also consider Virtual Server 2005 R2. It is free too.

There is no good reason I can think of not to download and install both so
you can experiment and decide based on that.

Hi and thanks for the links. I've dowloaded and read the link about virtual
pc vs. virtual server and I have learned which one suits my needs and it is
virtual server. Now, have yhou setup a virtual network with VS? I have needs
for hands-on for server 2003, network infrastructure...I've taken hands-on
courses, 70-290 and 70-293 and I plan on taking the MCDBA, so it would really
help me to get as much hands-on experience as I can. One final note: how do
you setup a virtual network on one physical box? Thanks.

OK. Bear with me, as I'm a newbie to virtual pc and the networking world. I
have installed MS Loopback Adapter, so with that, does virtual server, and
I'm using virtual server versus virtual pc for my lab needs, configure itself
as a virtual network? I'm taking a course, 70-293, Network Infrastructure,
and I want as much hands-on with DHCP, DNS, RRAS, etc. Thanks.

The fact that you are using a virtual network isn't really significant.
You can use a virtual network just like a physical network. All the
networking conventions remain the same.

Yes. If you have the loopback adapter installed in the host, Virtual
Server should create a virtual nework linked to that adapter (just as it
creates a virtual network for each active NIC).

In VPC you link a vm's NIC to a NIC in the host from the VPC console.
In virtual server you connect it to a virtual network from the admin
website. It amounts to the same thing.
