Ubuntu screen problem (not 24bit problem)

I have installed Ubuntu on a virtual pc and of course the screen is
messed up, because of the 24bit setting. So I hit control-alt-F1 to get
a text terminal. BUT the text terminal is in 640 x 200 x 4 and only
half of the screen shows up on my monitor. This makes it pretty much
impossible to edit a file. How can I fix this, so I can fix the 24bit
problem?

At the Grub prompt when it boots up, hit the <Esc> key to bring up the boot
menu (you have to be quick and hit esc as soon as the prompt comes up)
Select "Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.XX-XX-686 (Recovery mode) by hitting the
downarrow key once and hit <enter>, when the command line comes up, "cd
/etc/X11", "nano xorg.conf" page down a few times until you see a line that
says "DefaultDepth", change the 24 to 16, <Ctrl>-x, "y", then <Enter>,
finally "Exit" to reboot.

I haven't used Ubuntu, but Fedora 7 and 8 have the same problem.
Kernel option "fbcon=map:9" solved this for me. It seems that fbcon
does not work properly, not sure why [*]; that option disables it,
because terminal #9 does not exist, and you get a true text-mode
screen (as opposed to the 16-colour graphics mode you get now).

[*]: I found some docs with warnings about fbcon and the framebuffer
device being or not compiled (don't remember exactly) as a
loadable module, as opposed to being built into the kernel,
as some of these combinations don't work. This could be related
to the problem. But I'm not a Linux expert...
