Sorry for such a basic question but I am just starting to work with this
technology. I have created a new VM and when attempting to install the OS I
received messages indicating that an OS existed, etc and it would be
replaced? I am 80% sure that it was correct and it would install the OS on
the vm but something kept me from pressing continue.

When installing an OS on the vm it does not intefere with the existing OS?

This is strange, it should not find an OS the very first time you install it.

Are you sure you install it from within VPC?
Place you bootable CD in the CD-Reader
Launche VPC
Create a new virtual machine for the OS you want from the wizard
(using a new virtual hard disk).
Select that OS and click Start
Immediately go to the CD menu and check "Use Physical Drive [X:]" where
[X:] is you CD-ROM letter.
Then it should ask you to press a key to boot from the CD and aftwards,
everything is installed into the virtual machine, not your hard disk.

Do not launch the setup directly from your CD-Rom. This will reinstall
Windows into your PC, you have to virtually boot from it.

If you're not sure, it may be safer to backup your system first.

If the splash screen for the OS appears on the host when you insert the cd
cancel it. Capture the host cd drive with the drop down menu for the
virtual cd drive in the lower left of the virtual machine window. Then
click on the virtual machine window Action Menu and click on Reset. This
will ensure that all the setup actions are in the virtual machine.
