How to generate new MAC address

Further to my post about re-joining a domain and having read further here, I
thought having VPC regenerate the MAC address for the VPCs was a good idea.
The help tells you:
===quote===
Edit the .vmc file to remove the MAC address. Find the following line:

<ethernet_card_address type="bytes">0003FFxxxxxx</ethernet_card_address>

Remove the number so the line appears as follows:

<ethernet_card_address type="bytes"></ethernet_card_address>

After you remove the number, Virtual PC will create a new MAC address the
next time you start the virtual machine.
==unquote==

The problem is the VPC won't even start with the VMC like that. Absolutely
nothing happens: no error message, no half-way start, nothing. Even worse, if
I restore the VMC to the way it was, VPC tells me that the configuration file
for that image is invalid! No amounting of editing will bring it back to a
working condition. Even restoring the .BAK from the edit session fails to
satisfy it.

So, what is the correct way to have VPC regenerate a MAC address for a VPC?
I don't want to manually edit the number in case I clash somewhere. Unlikely,
I know, but the way this project's going so far....

Host OS: Win2K SP4
Guest OS: Win 2003 Server SP1
