Just wondering what opinions people have on the following idea.

Rather than giving employees laptops to occasionally work from home, would
it be possible to produce a VPC build that can VPN onto the company network?

What security concerns would there be surrounding this idea? Is it possible
to set up a VPC to be 'read only' so that once it is shut down, next time it
starts it is back to the standard build again?

I think this could be an excellent option for employees to work from home
using their own PCs but with a corporate OS / software build.

Any comments would be appreciated.

I'm interested in putting together a proof of concept for the virtual PC
idea. I've noticed that VMware offer a product that offers this called ACE.
We have an enterprise license for MS software hence looking at a virtual PC
solution.

Do most of your employees have PCs that meet VPC requirements? What

know there is a Mac VPC but not for Intel Macs)

IMO, requiring VPC may be more intrusive than asking employees to
install a suite of VPN, anti-malware and firewalls. IMO, it's in your
company's interest to have your employee's home machines clean enough to
access work from a home PC or within a VM, e.g. company laptops are
subject to infections being connected to a home network too.

This said, I've been accessing work over VPN from VM for over three
years with no problems. One advantage is the VM can be a full-fledged
domain member making single sign-on to company resources very easy. I
would never join my home machine to a corporate domain, neither would IT
like the names of my home machines ;)
