I have VPC with Windows Server 2003 web edition installed as a guest O/S. I
am trying to get an ASP.NET site to talk to SQL Server 2000 installed on the
host O/S and I always get access denied or SQL server does not exist errors.
I can change the configuration of the site and it can quite happily talk to
SQL Server on another machine on our network. I just can't get it to talk to
the SQL Server installed on the host O/S.

I have tried using the IP address and the machine name, I can ping the host
from the web server.

Any ideas?

I can set-up the web site on another of our development machines and it can
talk to my SQL Server. I had switched off the firewall on my machine for the
time being to see if that was the problem.

The w2k3 image can talk to other SQL Servers in our network.
Other machines in our network can talk to my SQL Server.
The w2k3 image just can't talk to my SQL Server.

This is no different to troubleshooting normal networking between two
machines. Things to check (for example), the host OS doesn't have a firewall
that is preventing a connection on port 1433 (or whatever the SQL Server is
listening on)

Ping, access a shared folder (using VPC's shared folders) and access a share
on the host O/S. The only problem is accessing the SQL on the host O/S.

I know, its weird, I had a little spare time yesterday so I set-up a Windows
2000 image and that with its IIS 5 can talk quite happily with the host O/S
SQL. I think the problem must lie with Windows Server 2003 web edition. We
have a actual Windows Server 2003 web edition (not running in VPC) here so
I'll ask permission from our network admin to see it that can talk to my SQL.
If it can then I'd guess the problem is w2k3 web edition, VPC and the host.
