I'm trying to run some old dos games in Virtual PC, specifcally
Bethesda's "Arena" and "Battlespire". There are other websites out
there that give some tips about how to do this using something like
Dosbox but I thought that VPC would be ideal, since I can run win95 or
even 3.1 in it's native environment.

One error I get is "invalid drive specification" when I try to run any
of these programs in dos, and it was suggested that this is because I
have an NTFS file system on the host machine. But the guest OS (win95)
says it's using a FAT file system. Do I need to format a FAT partition
on the physical disk to avoid this error?

No. Leave your host alone. Your host has nothing to do with your
guest's emulation.

What guest operating system are you using?

Are you using FAT16 or FAT32 for the guest file system?

Also the only thing VPC has for it over DosBox is the fact that VPC
virtualizes the processor instead of emulating it (although VPC does
emulate some things). This means that VPC is MUCH faster than DosBox
but it cannot be slowed down like DosBox can and it can never be as
compatible as DosBox is in compatibility with DOS games.

With that said I can run all 600+ of my DOS games quite well with my XP
2800+.

using Dosbox? or VPC? The guest file system is Fat16, I think. When I
go in to the drive properties in win95 it just says 'FAT'. I'm running
win95 and win98.
