Sandboxing a production domain controller

I wish to make a virtual copy of one our Win2k3 DC to do some testing before
going live.

What is best method for making a copy/backup of a production DC and
deploying it on a VM? So far, I've used the NT Backup utility to backup the
system state data from live DC and restore on the virtual DC. Unfortunately,
this approach always seems to trigger the BSOD with IRQL_NOT_EQUAL.. error.
From what I've read a full backup is not necessary (the live DC occupies
18GB of a 40GB HD), however, I'm not sure which directories and data are
absolutely critical in backup.

Any suggestions?
