SUSE 9.1 locks up after online updates

Using host windows xp and guest suse 9.1 pro.
used default installation for suse
everything other than sound seemed fine until after going online and
running updates.

have VPC mem set to 512 (tried lower settings like 484)
network set to NAT
login in as user or root
open yast
click online update and icon begins the stops
try to go online through konqueror and load google fine
try to search for anything and VPC locks

loaded suse in init 3 and went to online updatea with yast2 and VPC
locked

any ideas would be great. i'm burnt and need some sleep.
