Renaming computer, disconnects from domain OK but cannot rejoin do

I am building a series of images with different stages of a build on so that
I can test build iterations quickly. To do that, I take an existing VHD, copy
it, rename it, add a new VPC using that VHD and then start it. I then take
the machine out of the domain (the first image is not running) by joining a
new workgroup and restart the machine. I rename the computer and restart
again. Now, I want to re-join the domain with my new name but the machine
can't "see" anything, only itself! I can't even ping any machine which I know
are there. As soon as I "Turn off and delete any changes" and restart the
original image, everything is visible again.

What can be changing that makes the entire nertwork invisible?

BTW, I've tried with and without DHCP (in domain and workgroup mode), all
kinds of subnet masks, gateways, etc.

You may be hitting a problem with duplicate SIDs. I would try using
NewSID or SysPrep.

these for a colleague without issue. In fact, it was their increased use
which prompted my having to do this in the first place!

Do SIDs come in to the equation when I'm not on the domain? Remember, I can
disconnect from the domain, join a workgroup and rename the computer. It's
only when I'm at the "rejoin the domain" stage that there's a problem i.e. I
can't see any other addresses on the network. It HAS to be a networking issue
but quite what has me stumped.

is on the domain with its original name, there's no problem. It's only after
it's removed from the domain, renamed and then an attempt made to re-join to
the domain that the connectivity is screwed.

(sigh...) My post says that I can't even SEE the other machines in the
domain, much less join it. To clarify:

- the image I have connects to the domain just fine
- I need a copy of it, with additional software added, for testing another
application.
- I copy the VHD, create the VPC, etc. All good so far.
- Start the new VPC.
- Login as domain admin. I can see everything I should, connect to anything
to which I have rights, etc.
- Disconnect it from the domain to begin the renaming.
- Restart
- Rename the computer (to avoid name clashes - sometimes I'll need two or
more of these VPCs going at the same time)
- Restart
- Login as local admin
- Select to join the domain
- After a brief pause, I get the message that it cannot contact the domain
controller. Sure enough, the only machine I can see on the network now is
myself.
- All the above has been tried with DHCP and static addresses, different DNS
servers, etc. The machines have been deleted from AD directly, i.e. by
logging on to the PDC and doing it there.

I *really* don't want to have to start again, as there are 8 images in total
and creating them took me over a week and a half because of all the software
iterations I applied.

OK, I may well have solved this in a very simplistic way. It's certainly
worked for one machine and I can rename it, remove it, re-join it to my
heart's content. Only 7 more to do...

The solution was to use the PQDN for the domain name so, instead of just
'devdom' (which, incidentally, had worked for the 4 images I created for my
colleague a month or so ago), I entered 'devdom.cpe.co.uk' and bingo! Machine
added.
