Hi.

Does anyone know if it is possible for me to create a virtual machine
that is a copy or clone of an existing non-virtual machine? Complete
with already installed apps and configuration settings? I know I'd
have to change some things like eth card settings and maybe sound but I
don't consider that a problem.

If it is possible and you know of some online information that I could
browse, I'd really appreciate it.

The machine I'd be copying/cloning is Win XP Pro SP2

I need to install Win2003 server on my machine and I'd like to hang on
to my old XP setup as a virtual.

Why not just install Windows 2003 server as the VM and keep your XP as
is?

In addition to the responses from Ken and Steve, you also need to
consider licensing here. If your XP is an OEM version, you are not
allowed to transfer the license to a virtual machine.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'll sacrifice my weekend to the task :-)

Oh and the licensing shouldn't be an issue as my copies of XP and
Win2003 server are developer licensed through an MSDN subscription.

Use an imaging tool like Ghost, LiveState or Acronis TrueImage to capture an
image of your existing machine. Restore that image inside your VM. You may
wish to consider sysprepping the image prior to capturing it, or just try
without.

Otherwise there's VSMT, but I don't think that's going to be a goer in your
situation.
