What is "Application Virtualization"?

I just came across this term and while I know what VMWare is and what
it is good for, I am not sure I understand the concept of "application
virtualization". Isn't the OS (be it Windows 2K/XP or UNIX) already
taking care of the virtualization? If so, why this new type of
products?

I hope I am posting at the right newsgroup, since I couldn't find a
more suitable one. If you know a better newsgroup/forum for my
question, please point me there.

Say you have a small application that is known to break Microsoft Office,
but you just can not afford to not use this small program. Bingo -
virtualize it. When you are done using the app, deactivate the layer and it
is as if it was never installed on your computer.

The intrinsic benefit, of course, is that instead of spending the additional
resources of building an entirely new Virtual Machine to host an OS (and
associated RAM/CPU/HDD) just to run this small application, you can use the
existing OS just Virtualize that application. You basically accomplish the
same purpose but with less resources.
