VPC 2004 kind of slow on HP Proliant Server?Source: microsoft.public.virtualpc Sent: 04/07/2006 From: ohaya <(email address - cut out)> Message:Hi,
We installed VPC 2004 SP1 on an HP Proliant (DL350 or 360, I think) with
2 2GHz Xeon CPUs (again, I think). Host OS is Windows 2000 Server SP4.
The machine has 4GB of memory, and a 70+ GB SCSI hard drive.
We are finding that Windows 2000 Server (again, SP4) running on the
guest hosts are running somewhat slowly, especially when doing the Win2K
installations, i.e., this is before the VM Additions are installed.
Does VPC 2004 SP1 have performance problems when running on SMP
machines?
Thanks,
Jim

No, but it is not an SMP aware app. All VMs will run on one CPU. If
you're looking to run multiple VMs and take full advantage of your
CPUs, take a look at Virtual Server.
Also, installs will be slower since the major performance tuning is in
the VM Additions.

The install will also go slow on Virtual Server too. Installs are
generally slower than on the physical box, but you really only need to
do it once.

Steve,
Ahh. Ok. I've been mainly using VPC at home (on a single CPU machine),
and this was the first time I had to try it on an SMP machine.
Also, yes, it did seem to run ok, once VM additions was installed, but
the fellow who was helping me by doing the Win2K installation was
griping about how slow the installation was going :)...
I'll see if we can give Virtual Server a try...
