beta testing the Linux Additions.

I'm having trouble getting them to work in SuSE 10. The accompanying readme
is in two parts - the first to actually do the installation, and the second
to switch them on. The first part works perfectly (as far as I can see) but
the second part fails. The readme is fairly basic, as it tries to be the
lowest common denominator for all the flavours of Linux supported when
running under Virtual Server. For SuSE 10, I did the following:

1) Capture the VMAdditions iso (obviously!)

2) Open up Konqueror, change directory to the folder containing the rpm
files

3) Run the vmadd-full-0.0.1-1.i386.rpm file - this installs all the
individual components of the Additions.

4) Open the YaST Control Center and click the System Services (Runlevel)
icon - this shows that the five Additions services have been installed but
not running (as expected))

5) Flip into Expert mode, scroll down to the vmadd service, drop the
Start/Stop/Refresh combo and click Start now...

This gives the following error:

/etc/init.d/vmadd start returned 1 (unspecified error):
(kernel module not found)..failed

As I said, I have no expertise whatsoever with Linux, and there's almost
nothing on Google for this error...

I'll have a go with Virtual Server this evening and see how I get on with
that. If I get the same problem there, I'll post a message in the Virtual
Server forum.

I'm a total SuSE novice so this may not be the most efficient way to do it,
but here's how I accomplished it...

1. Go to the Applications -> System menu and start YAST.

2. Enter your root password and when the next screen comes up click on
"Software Management."

3. After it is done reading the package information click the drop-down at
the top of the dialog just to the right of "Filter" and select "Package
Groups."

4. In the window just under where you made the selection in #3 select
"Languages" under "Development" and make sure "gcc" is checked on the right
hand side of the dialog.

5. Same drill as #4 but go to "Sources" under "Development" and pick
"kernel-source" on the right hand side of the dialog.

6. Click the "Accept" button and it should install everything you need to
add the kernel module from there. It may prompt you about installing other
required packages, just tell it that's OK.

my case I had to add the --force parameter at the end of the line because it
complained about the kernel module already being installed.

fine.

However, when I try to start the vmadd service, I still get the following

He's just saying that you need to re-install the Additions at this point. In
other words, go back to the steps that you said you did (in your post on
4/5/2006) and repeat those steps. Even though you already did them, you need
to re-do them, now that you've got the pre-requisites (gcc and kernel
source) in place.

OK. I did that - now when I try to start the services, I get the following:

vmadd - starts correctly in runlevels 2, 3 & 5
vmadd-heartbeat - starts correctly in runlevels 2, 3 & 5
vmadd-scsi - didn't try to start it, as I don't have any SCSI devices
vmadd-shutdown - starts correctly in runlevels 2, 3 & 5
vmadd-timesync - says it has started correctly when I first start it, but
then shows that is hasn't started - if I try to restart it, it returns 7
(program is not running)

Also, the services don't start automatically at reboot...

I'm using the Xubuntu distribution and I'm trying to install de Linux
Additions but I didn't success.
I've installed all the prequisites, the gcc, cpp, and the linux kernel
source. I've installed this kernel source code: linux-source-2.6.15.tar.bz2.
It installs under /usr/src/ and I've uncompressed it correctly, then I've
moved the whole directory to /lib/modules/2.6.15-23-386/ and renamed the main
directory of the Linux kernel to build/ cause when I used the install script
file (vmadd-install.run) it didn't found the kernel sources. Then after I did
those steps, I run again the script and now it finds the kernel sources but
it returns this error on the log file:

*** VM additions kernel module ***
Compiling...
Cannot build module, kernel is not configured
make[1]: *** [/lib/modules/2.6.15-23-386/build/.config] Error 1
Could not build kernel module

What's the step I'm missing here?
