Hi,

I tried to use Windows Explorer to copy a directory in one of my guest
VMs to a drive that I had mapped using VM Additions, and I got a popup
saying that the drive doesn't support long filenames, and offered to
copy the file with a truncated (8.3 format) filename. The host is on
Windows 2000, and the Guest was Win2K3.

I was able to copy the directory by going through Network Neighborhood
eventually, but I was kind of surprised by the above.

Can anyone explain why the VM Additions-mapped drive wouldn't support
long filenames, or how to get to do that?

I had that problem too for copying sometimes. they say you can uninstall
VMAditions and install again, and the problem will go away
Right I have no problem copying long files

However, shared folder from VMAdditions behaves as the folder is not NTFS.
no security property available.
Worse, I can create new files, even modify them, but files like
whateverNamed.pst is not usable by outlook. from VM

I have seen Outlook on plain old real PC using network folder on server
without any problem whatsoever

Windows 2003 had the same problem on real machines until SP1.
Windows XP had the same problem on real machines until SP2.
The conditions weren't 100% reproducible but the odds increased if one
attached a hard drive with a USB or PCMCIA adapter after Windows Explorer
was already open.

Is your Windows 2003 running SP1?
