How to save current set of open documents and later return to them

Message:

hi All,
I am not sure whether I need virtual PC or if this is overkill for my
problem. If you would lend an ear and let me know what you think, I would
greatly appreciate it.

Is there a way to save, as a list, the set of documents (word docs,
excel spreadsheets, web pages ) that are open in your desktop at the current
moment (time 1)?

I would like to close these documents and work on something else for a
while (time 2)

Then at (time 3) I would like to return to the set of documents that I was
working on at (time 1): I mean, I want to open all the files that I had
open at (time 1), without having to hunt through the file storage directory
trees to find them all and open them all individually.
This would be a huge time saver, when multi-tasking among several projects.

Virtual PC seems like it would work, but then I have to set up the
installations of the XP OS identically and maintain them so that I can work
the same in each virtual OS instance of XP..

Thanks
-Albert
PS: I have tried multi-desktop powertools, but I actually want to close the
documents at (time 1), so I can free system resources for (time 2). I
believe that windows Vista may have a "save state" function but I cant be
sure.
