Hi,
I have got XP Prof installed with 2 Gb RAM
I have Virtual PC 2004 SP1 installed on it
in which i installed Win2003 Server with 512 MB RAM
now i am trying to install Windows 2000 Advanced Server with 256 MB RAM
When i am trying to start the Windows 2000 Advanced Server VM its giving me
an error that "there was no enough memory available on the host".

As per my knowledge, XP host can run min on 128MB.
Please assist.

like I said on a real Pc ( I did not say p3 but I should said P4), the real
OS used was 2k3 server std with DNS, and file server. ( I did say DNS in
previous post, did I not?). It did have SCSI raid. However users (4 total )
had defaulting using the server - it was non responsive until RAM was topped
up from 1 GB to 2 GB. It looked perfectly OK with I GB and a few
Experienced MS professional looked at it and thought the problem of
performance and user connecting was elsewhere.

Great that 1 GB worked for you but I had two experiences. that tell me
otherwise
1. 1 GB RAM XP Pro PC host running w2k3 server VM and one XP Pro VM. Could
not do much . Too sluggish at the VM and at the Host

2.
XP Pro PC with 2 GB :I can run easily 2 or 3 VM without any problem, and, I
can still do useful work with the host without any slowdown Like they say,
don't "starve" the Host with small amount of memory

In all cases they are total up to date with MS critical patches plus
anti-virus, internal firewall protection for each OS (real or virtualized).
May be yours don't need any for your application

I agree InCD can cause problem . - I found out after making the original
post last night from browsing a MSDN blog while I was searching for
unrelated problem.

machine.
I just wanted to set a test environment where i want 2 VM i.e. Win2k3, Win2k
Adv to be installed.

I have installed Win2k3 with 512MB

I want to install Win2k Adv with 256MB but not able to. performance issue is
not a problem for me right now because i am just testing it.

I just need a solution for not able to start the second VM.

I concur with Robert. I've been responsible for many servers over time, and
you can certainly run Windows Server 2003 (especially with a few users, like
the four that you've mentioned) on 512 MB of RAM (regardless of whether
it's a P3 or P4). If you are experiencing poor performance, the problem is
elsewhere. You probably needed to do more diagnostic work to identify the
actual bottleneck.

Running DNS on the Windows Server 2003 box should make little or no
difference. It has very little impact on the system, especially for just 4
users.

Are you sure that there's 2GB of RAM in the machine, and that nothing else
is using any of it? (there are steps in the KB article that you can use to
check what else might have allocated memory on the machine)

You will need to check what other things are running on your host machine -
please have a look at the KB article in question to see what steps you
should take to see how much memory other processes have allocated.

When you say "we have got 256MB still remaining for host machine" you are
correct. But whether this is enough for the host machine is just a guess -
you are guessing until you actually verify this.

My suggestion is to drop the memory allocated to your Win2k3 machine to
256MB. That will give you 512MB for your host machine.
