I have VPC 2004 running on XP SP2. I want to create a virtual windows 2000
domain so that I can test some things without it actually being o my network.
I have 2 virtual machines both running win2k server. I have one I promoted
to a DC and the other I want to have a member server.

The problem is that when I try to join the domain I get an error stating
that the server cannot be found and it is a DNS error. As far as I can tell
the DNS is correct and the promotion installed all of that information.

The network settings are set to localhost so that there is no interference
from the production network. I cannot ping back and forth from the 2 VMs,
but I can get a DHCP acknowledgement from the DC.

Is there something that I am doing wrong?

Have you verifed all the relevant TCP info on both the VMs? Can you

If both virtual machines are set to use local only (ie the virtual
network) then they will behave as if they are connected to a hub/switch
which is not connected to anything else. So they will behave just like two
machines on an isolated LAN.

The normal thing to do with servers is to use static IP addressing. Make
sure both machines are in the same IP subnet. If you have DHCP configured on
the DC and have set the other server to obtain its network config
automatically it should work.

When you have IP connectivity, make sure that the second server is using
the local IP address of the DC for DNS. Active Directory uses DNS to find a
DC for netlogon.
