Apparent Virtual PC and sound driver conflict FYI.

Message:

I have built a new system with a primary motivation of being able to setup
more complex network scenarios in Virtual PC for testing and demonstration.
The new system sports an ABIT AW8-MAX motherboard with a 3GHz Pentium D chip,
4GB RAM and a Matrox P650 dual monitor video card. The AW8-MAX board has a
Realtek based High Def Audio daughter card. Multiple SATA2 hard drives in
IDE mode (not RAID).

With a base install of XPproSP2, the latest BIOS and hardware drivers, and
only Virtual PCsp1 (all other applications ran fine but I did this base
install after narrowing down the problem to accurately diagnose it). I was
experiencing spontaneous system reboots only when attempting to run Virtual
PCs of any guest operating system. After reading the thread “Virtual PC
crash with New Gateway PC” I was encouraged to focus on the audio component
and sure enough if I disable the Realtek High Def Audio device under Windows
Device Manager and select no audio for the virtual PCs – ALL IS RIGHT WITH MY
LITTLE COMPUTER WORLD (except no sound)! (And we all know from experience
that it can all work together just fine like on my old P4 system with
integrated AC97 sound.)

So FYI to the community, I can validate a general Virtual PC conflict with
new generation audio driver(s) as implicated by my experience related to the
other thread but with different hardware.

The question then is this a Virtual PC issue, a Windows XP issue, a select
sound driver issue or combination of some sort?

I am new to news group use so humor and help me as needed. Will this get
passed along to ABIT and the XP people as needed or do I need to explore
other support avenues as well at this time?

I hope this info helps others and leads to help that gets my new system
totally functional.
